CLEAVE: SPLIT or STICK?

"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall CLEAVE unto his wife and they shall be one flesh."     Gen 2:24

Over the last few weeks, the topic of marriage has been on my mind.  I have very strong opinions about marriage, but for now, here, I will try to deal only with what I know to be fact.  I saw a prayer this morning and it really impacted how I would write this blog...

"Oh God, help us to see the difference between our frail, sometimes faulty opinions and Your rock solid truth." www.lysaterkeurst.com

I was listening to the radio, here, this morning and a man called in begging for prayers, asking that his wife would forgive him for a major screw up.  It reminded me of a friend of mine, whose blog you can read here.  She and her husband have been married 19 years!   Her husband screwed up too.  Big time...

Both of these women have every right to CLEAVE their husbands, but my friend, her heart, her faith, her Father, led her to CLEAVE to her husband.  Funny, this word cleave.  It has two completely opposite meanings.  One means to cleanly split and the other means to cling or adhere to.  Hmm...Wonder what the other woman will do?

There are several translations of the title verse.  The other words used; united, joined, hold fast to, bonds to, cling, but me, I like CLEAVE TO.  To me it seems such a STRONG word.  Oh..wait...no opinions.  Okay, okay, moving on...

I have heard many times that marriage it the TRIUNE image of God.  God is both fully male and fully female.  He created us in His image.  By creating us male and female He gifted each of us with part of Himself (really cool stuff).  It is only when we come together, in marriage, that the Trinity is completed in us!  Ain't that SO cool!?!

There are so many marriages today that are failing, are doomed to fail (without a healthy injection of Christ) or have already failed.  What will you choose today?  Will you choose to CLEAVE your spouse or CLEAVE to your spouse?

My prayer is that the God of Heaven, His only precious Son and the Holy Spirit will remain complete in all my married friends for now and forEVER!  AMEN
